In a strategic move to deepen community-driven security, the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, on Wednesday played host to a tripartite delegation to bolster the protection of the lives and properties of all law-abiding residents of the state.
Our Correspondent in Sokoto reports that the delegation comprised the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the Weights and Measures Department of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.
This was contained in a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Command, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, issued in Sokoto on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the courtesy visit, held at the Command’s Headquarters, underscored a renewed commitment to non-kinetic approaches in tackling emerging security threats across the state.
Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner of Police, alongside Command’s management team, highlighted the indispensable role of faith-based organizations in intelligence gathering.
The CAN Sokoto State Chapter, led by its Chairman, Rev. James Kayode, was recognized as a critical partner in fostering trust between law enforcement and local communities.
Rev. Kayode reaffirmed CAN’s commitment to mobilizing religious leaders as peace ambassadors, providing credible information, and promoting dialogue to pre-empt conflicts.
The Correspondents’ Chapel, NUJ Sokoto Chapter, led by its Chairman, Ankeli Emmanuel, was lauded for its dual mandate.
The Commissioner emphasized that the media is not only a partner in amplifying police successes and sensitizing the public on crime prevention but also a vital “watchdog” that ensures accountability.
In his remarks, Ankeli Emmanuel pledged responsible reportage that balances advocacy for security sector reforms with constructive collaboration, noting that “a well-informed public is the first line of defense.”
In an innovative expansion of security discourse, the State Coordinator of the Weights and Measures Department stressed the importance of collaboration in enforcement against economic malpractices.
The Commissioner noted that fraudulent weights and measures often linked to smuggling, hoarding, and economic sabotage directly fuel insecurity.
The partnership will see joint enforcement operations to protect consumers and dismantle illicit trade networks that destabilize the state.
The Commissioner called on other civil society actors to emulate this model, stating: “Security is a collective enterprise.
